“Soleil, you walk, think, and even breathe loudly. Do you do that on purpose to be annoying?”

Gem was attempting to close all of the interior doors of the underground bunker with his mind simultaneously. It was a small macro-telekinesis task, and therefore challenging. Not being able to do micro-telekinesis meant he couldn’t move small objects across the room, so shutting multiple doors in the base was difficult.

I was a distraction.

I often felt that I was completely unnecessary. Gem preferred to study alone. The silent thoughts he heard whenever anyone was in the vicinity were as loud as vocalized conversation would be to me.

“I’ll leave!” I offered, packing up my tablet computer, in which I was doing my own research. I had purposed to get my master’s degree in my spare time while I was stuck underground. There were many hours of the day where I sat in silence in my room, leaving Gem to study with his own quiet thoughts for a change.

“I didn’t mean you should go,” he insisted, his voice straining, eyes closed. His hands were clenched fists on the sides of his temple. “When I have to stop the next core Topha-quake, all of the staff and guards and directors and world leaders might be in the room. I’ll have so many distractions. If I can’t even close a bunch of doors with you right now, how will I save the world then?”

I was as silent as possible, focusing on emptying my mind for his sake, biting my lip as I watched his small forehead wrinkle and strain under the pressure. He stuck his tongue slightly out in concentration and bunched up his nose. He was adorable.

He opened an eye at me. “Not helping,” he said.

I blushed.

Finally, the door of the schoolroom slammed. And I heard the resounding noise of many doors down the hall shutting as well. They sounded like dominos falling one after the other.

Two professors with clipboards bounded into the room, taking notes. “Excellent, Gemini!” one exclaimed, pushing his glasses up on his head.

The other scribbled furiously. “Take a break,” he said to Gem, not looking up. He began murmuring to his partner and they left the room together.

Gem watched them go. He sighed, sinking into a chair at his desk, laying his head down on its surface. “They think I’m weak and will never succeed.”

I sat down next to him, wondering why I even bothered with the formality of conversation. “You should’ve spent some of your childhood years learning how to block out your telepathy for good!”

He was quiet for a time. “It’s my sixth sense, in every way,” he replied, eyeing me. “Just because you could hear ugly noises and insulting words, would you choose to deafen yourself permanently? Just because you could see something horrible, would you go blind on purpose?”

I blinked. “But it must get so loud and noisy...and awful!” I sputtered, looking for the right word.

“So, I take a break and go be alone a lot.” His high-pitched, prepubescent voice cracked a little.
